Is this a gloating post or are you going to share what you believe to be some of the concepts?

Nope and nope. RDECOM isn't the only domain looking at this.

Amen. Although I think the Windows' scalability vs. Unix's scalability is a valid argument because reasons stated in my post above. It's true that there shouldn't be a reason that Windows cannot scale to as many processors, but as I've said... it's not worth it because it isn't Microsoft's market.

Seems a bit early to have a finished iPT 5 hanging around. It's not on market for 6 months.

That's because it is capacitive, meaning it is a surface that senses the ouch, not an actual button.

Thanks for that explanation. I was curious about the term and how it was used.

I always question the sanity of people who claim to question other peoples sanity of ridiculous things.

It's temporary just to avoid the shutdown. A government shutdown so that Tea Partiers can push their conservative social agenda wouldn't go over too well.

50 billion out of a budget of what? A trillion and a bit?

I could remove 25% of your body weight and make you slim and sexy.

On the other hand, I could remove less than 2% of your body weight and render you a useless, comatose, vegetable.

It's not a matter of how much is cut as it is what is cut.

I fly between Manchester and New Jersey (Newark) a Lot, like 7 or 8 times a year for personal reasons :)

Anyway, I fly a mixture of KLM / Northwest Airlines, Continental or British Airways, it would be pretty cool, though most of the time I use my ipod whilst sat in the lounge then when on board I watch their movies, they offer like 6 of them and some good comedy channels.

Then again if I loaded some movies onto my ipod I could probably watch them, its just deciding before you go what mood your in!

All true... but what happens when you replace the hard drive? Willing to buy one from Apple with the OS preinstalled?

Thats what the USB stick is for - you boot from it like you used to do from DVD and install - that simple.

USB sticks are too expensive and take too much time to duplicate "en masse". DVDs are very cheaper and take few seconds to duplicate if even that since they are being pressed (not burned in the case of mass duplication). USB sticks are also more expensive.

It doesn't make sense to go to a USB only distribution model, at least from a cost basis. As for Mac App Store... meh... why not do downloads outside of the Mac App Store, I don't want to use that POS. I've been installing OSes from HTTP and FTP since the mid-90s, no need for a "Mac App Store" to do it. What happens if I don't have a 10.6 or 10.7 installation going and just want to wipe the computer ? Linux has been doing network installs from nothing. Upon purchase, just provide a USB thumb-drive image I can put on any 1 GB thumb-drive to boot into the installer where I put in my purchase code or something. No need for the "Mac App Store".

Funny how history repeats itself (or better the comments on current events) ... those are the same arguments that I heard when computer manufactures started to get rid of the Floppy drive: but CDs are so much more expensive, I can't get everything on CD, people don't know how to handle them, ....
Also: don't compare the price of big read/writeable USB sticks in the store - with a fixed (read-only) image they can be mass produced fairly cheap - yes DVD might be a tiny bit cheaper for now - but there are other cost savings with the tiny USB sticks compared to the big DVD boxes (packaging, shipping, storage, .... and you save the money to put the DVD drive in the machine)
Lets face it: the DVD is at the end of its life cycle, it was great for its time but now is the time to say good bye.

At this point in time most non-enthusiasts are barely comfortable reinstalling an OS. They'd be totally lost if OS X wasn't on a disc. I'm sure Apple doesn't want to have to deal with all the extra support calls and will provide Lion on DVD for any Mac that has a SuperDrive. DVDs are on their way out but still have a lot of mainstream life in them.

even non-enthusiasts manage to put a USB stick in the right slot. You know, even my father (who does not know anything about computers and sometimes scares me with his very naive computer questions) knows how to put his USB stick in the computer to copy some pictures to it. If he can handle to put a DVD in the drive to boot and reinstall, he can handle to put a USB stick in the right slot to boot and reinstall.

We are still in a transition period. There is zero reason to think 10.7 won't come on DVD. Not everyone -- actually most -- people in the U.S. do not have high speed broadband (4 Mbps or faster) service either because of cost or availability [stats here for the non-believers: http://www.oecd.org/document/54/0,3343,en_2649_34225_38690102_1_1_1_1,00.html] . It would be suicidal for Apple to ship a multi-GB OS only via download. Especially Apple home users, who bought into Apple because of it's ease of use, are not going to sit for hours as their new shiny OS downloads, then sit for another 15-30 min as it installs.

Why? You don't need high speed internet to put a USB stick in your computer, no need to wait for hours, just plug it in and be happy.

oh man.. why does this thread have 3 pages???

Easy answer in a paragraph: EF lenses are designed with a full-frame camera in mind. EF-S lenses are designed with a Crop (1.6x) camera in mind.

Differences between them? Very little. Example: I used my 11-16 EF-S on my 5DII until I got a EF UWA. Drawback? I could only use the 16mm of it if I wanted to avoid a wild vignette, because the EF-S lens was designed for a CROP camera, one that would crop the outer edges of the image, thus eliminating the vignette.

If you put a hypothetical 50mm EF-S and a 50mm EF on any given camera, assuming the mounts worked, the image would be exactly the same.

however, if you put a 50mm EF (which work on both FF and crop cameras) on a FF vs a crop camera, the images will be different. On the FF you will have a true 50mm FOv, whereas on the crop camera (1.6x) you will have essentially an 80mm FOV, because the crop camera crops the image to result at 1.6x the size of a FF cameras FOV.

    something like that.

So: The lenses are not any different really.

I think you both just said exactly the same thing, so I'm not sure why Full of Win is arguing?

If I shoot my 50mm 1.8 II through my 7d I am effectively multiplying the lenses focal length with the cameras crop factor to give the photographs field of view. ie 50x1.6=80.

So focal length 50mm= field of view 80mm. (On a 1.6 crop)

Allthough...This statement from thatisme 'So, you WILL get different focal lengths from 2 identically marked lenses where one is an EF-S lens and the other is an EF lens.' is false.

You will, in fact, get two different Field of Views but the same Focal Length.

Thanks for the correction, and good catch.

So, for the OP, the difference between EF-sand EF lenses is that EF-S are lighter and cheaper and are tied to 1.6 sensor cameras. EF is more versatile since they work on all EF mount cameras (including EF-S). They can be very cheap or very expensive(and good) when you get into L series lenses.

There is really no good reason to compare focal length or field of view between the two since construction wise, they are like apples and oranges.

Where it becomes relevant, is when you have an EF lens, and you own different format cameras ( like I do). my 400mm 2.8 L IS lens is a true 400mm on my 5D mark II, and 520mm on my 1D mark IIn (1.3) and 640mm on my old 20D. I don't really care about the EF-S mount since it only applies to one of the 3 camera bodies.

Is not true: a 50mm EF lens and a 50mm EF-s lens will have the same focal length and field of view on a crop camera.

    This is not correct.

A EF-s 50 mm lens is 50 mm on a 1.6 camera. A 50mm EF lens on that same camera is similar in image to a 80mm EF-S lens. The reason for the difference comes into play by the amount of the lens the camera is using to record the image and the proximity of the rear element to the camera sensor.

Sadly, these "findings" really only say (or rather confirms the status quo) one thing to me.
    Mac users are...PRETENTIOUS!

    Lets see:
    computer loyalty...zealot
    Having degrees...rich
All other snob crap...flamboyantly rich and or wannabe rich

    My favorite is:
computer-savvy and "early adopters"...LOL, clueless overbearing confidence based on ignorance.

Not only is the "genius bar" full of retards who help more retarded retards, but omg...if "computer savvy" means knowing how to use web applications that don't require install of real programs, then I'll grant "mac-users" that one.
Considering that nearly all "Pro IT" overwhelmingly used Windows not to mention that "gamers" are one of the most comptuer-savvy consumers, where the heck do computer-savvy Mac users come from? Those who can use FB, Twitter, Tumblr and other "early adopter software" vs. the old school, MS Office, ultra graphics games, Product Lifecyle Management Systems, and other real software? Yeah, I guess "young 20-somethings" will find out how using your Facebook / Web 2.0 computer skills in the real world will get your fired!

Around here, I'm fairly certain it's around $4/Gal.

The cheapest gas station in the area is a good 3-4 miles down, and I still drive there to get gas.

The other day I saw it for $3.60/Gal, and filled it up. Honda Civics FTW.
