As the saying goes at Apple: "If you can't beat'em, dual'em"

I say whatever it takes to keep up. Doesn't bother me that there are two CPU's under the hood. Anyways I am sure that OS X is way more optimized for dual Processors than Windows 2000 or XP. Having OS X far outways the slight difference in hardware performance. OS X is specifically designed for Macs, and optimized to take full advantage of the hardware. No one that has a Dell, Compaq, Gateway...etc... can say the same thing about Windows. The only way that would happen is if Microsoft came out with a special Intel version of Windows or AMD version. Never gonna happen. I know most of you already know this but I just thought I'd throw it out there again.

Are you sure it is just PDF's? I think the location downloaded documents (of all types) are saved is a function of the web browser, not the application that opens each document. I know that Safari defaults its downloads to the desktop, so maybe Mozilla does the same. Check the preferences to set where you want downloaded documents to save.

The Army is already using iPod Touches in the field. Put one in an Otterbox case and it's ruggedized.

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/194623

And here's something from our very own MacWorld:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/145159/2009/12/raytheon_app.html

There's a lot of waste in government, military or not. If the military can save money buying COTS solutions, we should all be happy.

And to those who keep trying to throw the discussion off-track, please keep the political cr@p off of here. There are plenty of other places where you can argue the good and bad of military/government/reality TV/etc. Personally, I think we should send the military after the Reality TV producers and contestants, but this isn't the forum for that :D

I've gone under anesthesia twice now, once under general anesthesia for a broken and dislocated arm, and on the other under a peridural for the removal of a pilonidal cyst directy above my tailbone (not nice).

I'll tell you straight away the general anesthesia was MUCH worse. I was about 12 at the time, and it was all pretty smooth throughout. Don't try to cheat while fasting, otherwise you'll almost certainly throw up. I stayed under observation for about two days, and it was worth it. When I was told I could walk, I went to the bathroom with some help from a nurse to take a bath (or at least rinse a little) and fainted (the only time in my life). I woke up a little later on the bed, still a little dazed. After that it was hard to keep food or drinks down, too. I'm absolutely certain it was the anaesthesia, since I was only on paracetamol and I have NEVER had ANY problem with that, and I have migraines once every two or three days (genetic thing).

During the cyst operation, which happened in january of this year, the peridural was smooth. I was given something to make me sleepy, since I told the anaesthesiologist it would be boring and I'd be annoying him with questions about how everything was going "down there". I could "walk" fine after I laid on my gurney for a couple of hours, though you have to remember that a surgeon had just removed all the tissue above my tailbone. First time I had ever seen a nurse I deemed "hot as hell".

Anyway, yeah. Good times. Oh, and both were IV. According to my father, who is a surgeon himself, gas is hardly used nowadays, and the main reason for it to be used is if the person does NOT want needles. If its general, you'll probably be woozly later and feel light-headed, although it might be local for you, I'm not sure. It seems scary to be awake while someone is cutting you with a scalpel, but you really feel nothing at all. For kicks, get someone to film you when you wake up, it can get really funny. :p

    P.S. First post, yay.

Congrats on your first post and welcome to MacRumors!

Anyway, the only surgery I've had that I know of was back when I was a kid and I can't really remember it. I'm pretty sure they used gas, though.

Good luck with the surgery, iGary. I'm sure it'll all go fine.

at&t will know what your doing at all times:eek:

While I'm worried about the government, I'm more concerned about the corporations who would use my information.
Considering how corporations screwed up when it came to administering home loans, you think they'll do any better with your private information?

    Talk about a bad idea.

So the fact that AT&T can currently know everything about you from miles away is ok, but if they add a chip that works for 30 or 40 feet...that's a problem?

Not sure what all the fuss is about the backlit keyboard... I don't think I ever found that feature to be useful on my MBP.. I guess if you type "pecking" style it's pretty useful..

On the 11incher I would love to see:
    1. SD card slot
    2. 3G or 4G

Otherwise some incremental improvements on memory, cpu, battery life, would all be great!

If I would leak something, I would make sure the device is clean, the camera is in focus and there is enough light.

Why are leaked images (almost) always such bad quality?

High quality images would make it too easy see that it's all fake/mockup/... ... guess that's also the reason for the ugly scratched plastic cover - if the thing would be real he/she would have taken it off for a better picture.

Macrumors: please move back to page2 or better page99 ... it's too obvious of a fake. I rather see the Wozniak comment on page1 since this has some real content.

I was surprised that it was only marginally faster than the GUI version (a little under 6 hours per unit), but SETI's FAQ explains that the GUI on a dual processor uses one processor for the graphics and one for the computation, so the graphics "don't count" much. And, when running SETI CLI version, you still don't get the benefit of the dual processors (except to run something besides SETI at the same time, of course) unless you explicitly start two SETI processes at the same time, each in its own directory.
I will report my results of single-CLI runs after I determine the effect of the Energy Saver settings and the effect of the -verbose option that reports progress in the Terminal window. Then I will try double-CLI runs.

I would definetly buy one given that it'll be released - today, tomorrow or in 10 years time - my current mobile, a LG, makes me a sad being - anything with decent menus and nifty design might even invoke some hidden love for phone capable gadgets (other gadgets on the other hand is already giving my economy more than enough problems - but I love it and wouldn't do it in any other way)

Guy told me the last day to pick up a Beta key was wednesday. Missed it by one day! WTF.

Hum, you do understand all those big financial institutions and banks don't actually use Windows server for their big enterprise level CRMs and other important packages right ?

Unix and Linux are used for way more than just "web server". Maybe you should try working 1 day in IT before you talk about IT. ;)

Of course, you probably don't want to hear the truth and wouldn't accept it anyhow, keep believing in Windows' importance because that's what you see on the desktop, I'll keep working on real OSes in my cushy IT job far away from anything made by Redmond.

    O'RLY?

IDC: Windows dominates Linux in servers, not just the desktop
Windows beats Linux when it comes to servers by well over a three-to-one margin, as it has for at least a year.
    http://blogs.computerworld.com/15675/idc_windows_dominates_linux_in_servers_not_just_the_desktop

IDC: Windows Server dominates server revenue for Q4 2010
IDC reports Windows Server has increased its market share by revenue to 42.1%, , far ahead of its nearest rival, Unix, at 25.6% and Linux at 17%.
IDC notes that Microsoft Windows server demand was positively impacted by the x86 server market refresh as hardware revenue increased 16.8% year over year.
Windows servers generated Quarterly revenue of $6.3 billion for represented 42.1% of overall quarterly factory revenue from the shipment of 1.5 million servers, the highest quarterly total ever reported for Windows servers.
    http://microsoft-news.com/idc-windows-server-dominates-server-revenue-for-q4-2010/

Don't presume just because you have an "IT job in unix or whatever", that everyone else who doesn't work at your company is a computer idiot. Not that this has any impact on "IDC research" but I've actually worked with languages from PL/1 (that is...Programming Language One!) up to .NET. And I can tell you that most of these "Windows bashing / Linux conquest rhetorics" are only taken up by actual computer idiots who just follow one side of hype...or college kids (who at least don't know any better...yet). Go to a REAL computer forum like Ars Technica and see what they think of "enterprise Macs" there. ;)

And as to the displays, I quote the May 2011 issue and its preliminary findings: (this is also in response to all the "yeah, but a Xoom has a wide-screen format")

among the best tablet displays we've tested. It has excellent color and is viewable from almost any angle without degrading the image. The Motorola Xoom's display can be viewed from almost any direction too, but it loses more contrast at off-angles than the iPad

It's good to be square. Apple's approach has its advantages, too. In land-scape mode, for example, the display's greater height lets the e-mail app display more messages in the inbox, assuming you use the same size text as on other tablets. When you're typing in landscape mode, an iPad can accommodate a taller onscreen keyboard or more content on the screen above the keyboard. In portrait mode, its display is less cramped when you're Web browsing or reading a magazine or an e-book. And when you're playing games that take advantage of a display's height and width, that screen also allows for a greater range of motion.

Thanks for the feedback. It was a challenging mountain to frame as it was the first of many other peaks off to the right. Here is a broader view of Jones Peak and the adjacent peaks to the right... to me this takes away the focus from the alternating snowy/dark areas of Jones Peak, and it also seems unfinished on the right:

    http://monogon.org/gfx/jonespeak2.jpg
    1/640s, f/7.1, 70mm, ISO 100
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM

Just for grins, here is a shot of the Collegiate Peaks at 10mm focal length... and it still appears unfinished on the right. I guess I should have done what my sidekick did and just take a panorama. :)

    http://monogon.org/gfx/collegiatepeaks.jpg
    1/320s, f/10, 10mm, ISO 100
    10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

I like the wider one a bit more but you are right it's still hard to make it look complete edge to edge. I like the panorama alot. Very nice range shot.

My previous post was worded a little poorly. Ansel Adams probably did make his own paper, and did a lot of "post processing" in the darkroom.

Back in the film SLR days, most hobby/amateur photographers did not participate in the "post processing" of their shots because they sent their film to a lab to get developed. That does not mean that there was no post processing being done to their pictures though.
