No, it doesn't. The line-in port does not supply power for a microphone.

The combined line-in/out jack on the newest Macs certainly DOES supply a small amount of power for the mic built into the iPhone headphones. The separate line in port on older Macs doesn't, but the headphone port does supply power (on my 2009 MBP at least). It's not the same amount of power as the mic port on PCs, but it's similar. The mic on an analogue headset designed for a PC has never worked on a Mac. The old Plaintalk mics back in the beige Mac days used to have a really long connector, so the tip would touch the power part of the socket in the Mac.

Some people seem to want a new Dock Connector, but I think the current one is here to stay for quite a while yet. It's thin, tough, and has plenty of pins for analogue and digital data. Plus there are thousands of devices that use the Dock Connector. If Apple were to change the design, it'd likely prevent future devices from connecting to the thousands of accessories.

The only problem I've ever had with the connector is the quality of the cable. It's awful. It's made from a kind of eco-friendly rubberised plastic, which tends to tear easily. I've had two or three cables split at the connector end; the cable plastic is much too soft.

So... BotCon the Hasbro International Transformers Collector's Convention on September 22-25 would be right out, then?

Read kainjow's post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2986197&postcount=15); you get more than just an email address for $99.

Well, Google also provides a free calendar, a spreadsheet application, a chat application (nicely integrated into the GMail web interface), a web page creator, etc..

    Have a look at http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

For online albums, there are lots of non-Google free offers. If you buy .Mac, you pay mainly for the integration with Apple's iLife applications.

    WanaPBnow:

This may come as news to you, but a single person with a single experience is nothing but a single data point. In order to have confidence in a conclusion, we need lots of data points. Data points other than yourself tend to mention OSX crashing on occasion, and tend to mention at least some versions of Windows running reliably.

Speaking for myself, I've had a small number of OSX kernel panics in a little more than a year on my home machine, dozens of kernel panics on my work Mac (which I don't even use much), and very few problems or crashes with any of the dozens of Windows NT/2k machines at work. In my experience OSX is less stable than Win2k, however I am not foolish enough to claim that my observation makes this the truth for everyone.

It seems one of the best features is the upgrade price for existing customers. Free. This makes all of the upgrades even better, since they are free. Apple has really eliminated the possibility for pundits to bash the new version, since it is free for existing users. It is an amazing upgrade.

The Xbox 360-2 looks a lot better than the new PS3, although I would rather it have a matte finish so as not to show fingerprints or dust as easily. That being said, the Xbox 360 should have came with wi-fi built in from the get go and not been an add on $80 option. I moved my Elite from the living room to my bedroom just so I could connect it to my AEBS and not have to spend a pretty penny doing it.

"...Priced at $299 (same as the current "Elite", so expect price drops on the older ones)..."

Probably not...Remember how Sony didn't lower the sale price of the original PS3 when the refreshed model came out--even though it was higher?

Based on Apple's vascilating attitude over the last year, I'm taking a wait and see position.

I'm very happy to witness their success, yet it's too bad they've chosen to dampen what should be a great celebration, by acting as though they've got to go on the attack with law suits.

In the last year they've launched more suits than any other company in the industry.

Acting insecure does not become them.

    Hi there

    I have a late 2009 Mac mini (3,1) with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.

I recently upgraded to 8GB RAM and would like to put in a Solid State Drive and a CPU upgrade.

I was wondering if anyone can help with answers to the following questions, or share their experiences?

    - Is it possible to replace the hard drive with a Solid State Drive in this version of Mac mini?

This is the primary design flaw with the iPad. This tablet can't be the normal person's computer unless every normal person has a tech friend/relative to keep the tablet working/updated. So while Woz is correct that the tablet will be the normal person's computer, Apple's iPad is not yet that tablet.

Same for all the iGadgets with an iTunes account attached. Why apple doesn't make the default behaviour "charge" not "sync" and then simply verify that it's not the same iTunes account and "do nothing" instead of the hassle of it hiding all your music if you plug an iDevice into a PC and you're mate decides to click eject for you if your charging off it.

I can understand the need to only offer syncing on a device that isn't internet and wifi enabled because the only way of adding stuff to it is to sync to a computer but for all the other devices, it would be good if it was 100% self-contained.

I'd have no issues getting a used Mac Mini then turning it into a media centre through an LCD TV at a later date because I eventually know a Mac Pro would be my best choice for running Pro Tools 9. Someone who just wants to listen to and buy music or video, send emails, view youTube clips and keep in touch on social networking sites doesn't necessarily need a computer when the iPad does it all. Apple could even offer a way of interfacing their external DVD from the Macbook Air with the iDevices so you can rip your own music to the device itself without even needing a computer.

I've had a very good experience with Pages. The first time I used it (quite literally too) I went to Applications, opened iWork, opened Pages, and looked for a nice template. I opened it, put in my information (it was a brochure for a condominium's open house) and changed some of the default styling. Bam. I literally had a nice, clean, even pretty, brochure that only took me 15 minutes to produce. 15 minutes.

Will I be using it as a word processor? No, it's horrible at that! Will I be making research reports with it? Well, I'll be making the text in Word and then copying it over to Pages :D. Pages is an awful word processor, but a beautiful layout program.

Look, this is the second time you've told me, incorrectly, what you think I believe.

"Informed people" is self-explanatory. I don't intend to spoon-feed you a response just so you can intentionally misrepresent it a third time.

What I'm trying to do is understand your logic. The reason I'm summarizing your position is because I want to avoid misrepresenting you before I go on to explain my own point of view. Please show me where I misrepresented you. This isn't a political debate. I am only asking questions because I actually want to know the answers, not because I'm trying to "win". If you look back on our posts, I don't think you'll find any point where I intentionally misrepresented your posts. The fact that you're reacting defensively is surprising to me.

Let's just forget it. It's my fault for expecting a rational conversation on a message board.

The American government taxes less and serves less than any other western industrialized country, while spending over a trillion dollars a year trying to control foreign affairs through military might.

That my friend, is a recipe for financial disaster.

    Have you been studying Mises?

This trend on these forums of people making posts without apparently reading the original post or any other posts in the thread before making a post is getting a little annoying.

Which of those things allows you to stream video and audio from an IOS device?

If iOS supported DLNA you would be able to do this without any new standard, there is no need for a new apple developed standard for this, I can stream video from my android phone to my TV, Bluray and PVR already. This is something devices have been able to do before Airplay came along.

It's not hat these devices need a new standard, just for apple to support an already industry wide used one.

I've been using the iPhone's Google maps in that way for almost 3 years and I have not once had that be an issue.

I dunno, I guess something bad could happen, but it sure doesn't seem likely to me at this point. And even if it does happen to me soon I'm prepard for "once every 3 years" as a failure rate.

Ok, but when a road changes and you don't have the newest map then what are you doing? Manually downloading is what.

I'd rather it be an automatic process.

Both methods have drawbacks: "Not always available" vs. "Not always current."
Given that I've never had a problem with availability, I'm actually interested in an app that promises to stay current without my having to download maps manually ahead of time.

Since you are already using Google maps this way, then why pay $40 for a service? Traffic updates? Road directions? Talking to you? All fine things but I have also been using Google maps this way and have had refresh problems in areas of otherwise good coverage. I would pay for a map service which had a small local map (say one in a 200 mile radius of your main zip code) that I could have on board. Using over the air, I'll just stick with free google maps.

There's a big difference between "many single machines can fail and the cloud survives" and "individual machines are stable". Most businesses can't afford the mass cloud redundancy of Google, and most can't afford to have machines go down regularly.

The point of "big iron" is that you buy one large expensive machine that just sits there doing its work quietly for years on end, with little active administration needed.

I guess each situation is different. I'm more interested personally in the SOHO scenarios, where dedicated servers and an exclusive IT staff are slowly losing relevance (http://37signals.com/svn/posts/2785-the-end-of-the-it-department).

(Although the news of Gmail losing emails gives me pause (http://www.macworld.com/article/158186/2011/02/gmail.html).)

Hope to see you join the team GSX, if you don't won't to run it 24/7 don't just have the client on when you use the computer. It is designed so that you do not notice a decrease in speed when using the client.

Great to know the the project is open, I never gave it that much thought :o Still even if it was run at a profit the fact is a cure has still occured :)
