Thumbs up! However, although I won't propose Dems are more effective in running government, at least they are sympathetic to the average Joe. :)

Much easier said then done. Remember, it takes 60 votes to get anything done in the Senate and the Republicans obstructed virtually ever bill brought up.

i though the budget was not allowed to be fillibustered. It has its own rules in place on it.

You clearly haven't left the US much. MOST other countries offer programming ala carte, and it works fine and is almost always about a buck a channel. It basically turns into you getting a bunch of the nonsense like home shopping free with subscription of 10 channels... television in the US is so regulated, taxes, and expensive because of things like ESPN and Disney having such a dominance on the providers, this country is f'd...What they do in other countries has nothing to do with how they would do it in the USA. Do you seriously think the cable companies would introduce a choice where they stand to lose money? There's no way, unless the FCC forced them, that this would happen.

Also, $1/channel is way too low. Just because you can get 10 channels for $60, doesn't mean each channel would be priced at 60 cents. IIRC, a popular channel like ESPN costs the cable provider $4/subscriber ... and that's with Disney forcing the whole ABC/ESPN/Disney package of channels onto the cable co.

If ALC does happen, I would guess that most people would pay the same or more than they currently do. A small percentage may pay less, but it really depends on what channels they pick (and whether those channels survive).

And how is that a con? The reason cable companies say they charge so much is because they give 100s of channels. If there were only 40, they couldn't hide behind that. It's a con when channels that focus on specific programming are forced to close up or offer the same old crap that everyone else does. For instance, a channel like BET may not survive to provide focused programming to the African American community because they would likely lose over half their subscriber base.

And since when is the goal of business to protect the undesirable? If 10 chain restaurants open in your town and nobody eats at 2 of them, should the other 8 raise their prices and give the overage to the 2 nobody likes? No, the 2 should shut down. No sense in having a business if nobody wants the business. Cable channels are a business. This isn't the goal of diverse television programming. Take a look at Obama's position on ALC. This is what I'm referring to.

As for letting the less popular networks whither, I do see this as a con. Networks will need to appeal to a broader audience in order to compete. Get ready for 15 channels showing the same formuliac sitcom. 20 channels of reality TV shows. 10 channels of daytime/social talk shows. 15 channels of sports. And 13 channels of news. No room for channels like History Channel or Discovery Health ... as they'll morph into a TNT or SpikeTV.

..in favour of spending more on the military (buying new jets in the coming years) and more willing to spend huge amounts on security and the like (~$1 billion spent for security during the Toronto G20 summit)..
    .

The G20 summit was absolutely pointless, it'll be a year in a few months. Here's hoping for a better next 4 years.. and hopefully the Liberals get their act together and come back.

If states went into deficits because people didn't have enough money to pay their taxes how will raising taxes solve this problem?

Where do you come up with the idea that people don't have enough money to pay their taxes?

If you drive for work, there is a good chance you drive in the same areas, I can't see this app not caching maps.

I'm national, I've driven all over the UK this year. My cell phone is on O2, and the 3G coverage is very poor. I've opted for Orange on the iPad as their 3G is much better.

I snagged an open box 16G from Best Buy for $388 all in last week.

When this popped up I decided to pick one from VZ and return the Best Buy unit. While I was at Verizon rchecking out with their last 16G some other guy came in looking for one.

Doing the math I was looking at saving $65 bucks minus the hassel of wiping and reboxing the thing; driving back to Bast Buy; loosing the six months no interest and setting up the new one. Not such a huge deal in my world so I offered it to the guy and he took it instead.

Maybe I scored some karma points...

Outlook still only works with gmail email. There is no support for gmail calendars, contacts, todo's, etc...

    Outlook is still unusable.

Yeah, what's up with that? Wasn't that one of the major additions announced for SP1? Or are we missing here something?

Of course they are less expensive. No packaging, no media, no store space, no shipping required.

    They should be less expensive.

If they were the same price this would be a serious problem. I still have a problem at the outrageous prices of CDs and DVDs because they are more expnsive than cassettes were, but cheaper to produce. It is all about greed and $$.

Apple wants to make money too. but they eliminated some considerable costs.

I hope it fixes the USB connection to Canon cameras. They broke it with 10.4.7. I'm still booting from my portable backup drive when shooting tethered (looks really pro on location).
I dread the going-backwards-sytem-reinstall BS tho, so that's what I have been doing.

My EOS 400D works fine (in tethered mode as well as just transfering from the memory card)?

Disagree. It's not ridiculous. Valid patent protection is great. That's the whole point of a patent to protect your invention. Any company with a valid invention and patent should pursue any and all infringements.

However, there are many high-tech patents that are BS or weak. Plus, I think patent holders should have to make claims of infringement in a reasonable amount of time after a potential infringement. Sitting back and waiting for products to be wildly successful before pursuing a case is nothing but settlement bloat. Finally, there is patent trolling which should be illegal as it's just lawyers looking to cash in on settlements and costs consumers. Patent trolling is like ambulance chasers. Lowest form of greed.

As I posted before Kodak once was an amazing company with many discoveries and patents in the imaging field.

Anybody close to Rochester NY should go and see their museum.
(You can also see the factory buildings that are being ripped down)

What a shame for this company to lose its vision and completely miss the digital age. (With a few exceptions)

The problem with patents is that the longer they are someplace dormant and unused it will only be a matter of time until somebody has a similar idea, driven by technological advances.

I would imagine that researching any given patent is very hard, depending on how it is worded and how vague and weak it is.
So, Apple and RIM and others may have looked, but not well enough.
Doesn't make them innocent of course and they will have to pay up, if proven.

A revision of patent laws should include that if a patent filer is not using his patented technology within a certain time period it would become open to others. That forces patent trolls to do something, rather then waiting for somebody with vision to make it successful and then cash in.

Buying Kodak may be a good tactic depending on the outcome, but the place is almost dead at this time and anybody who buys it would most likely buy it with the intention to use the patents and close the company altogether.

    Only a matter of time.
